How to Choose the Best Live Webcams

Whether you’re conducting an important video conference call with your boss, or just chatting with friends and family online, a good webcam is a must-have. But not all cams are created equal, and some are better than others at capturing the perfect image.

A high resolution is a common feature to look out for, with the best cameras achieving up to 2,560 x 1,440 (QHD) or 3,840 x 2,160 (4K). But don’t assume that a higher resolution is necessarily the deciding factor when choosing a webcam, as quality differs massively in other areas. A great webcam will be able to capture vivid colours, handle gloomy conditions and prevent washed-out highlights or noisy images. Effective autofocus with face tracking is another handy feature to have, too.

Many webcams have an eye-line view that eliminates the awkward angle of looking down at your laptop screen and instead puts you in the centre of the frame. This is particularly useful for video calls with larger groups. Other things to consider include a camera’s field of view (FOV), frame rate and encoding type.
