This recipe is made with only basic pantry ingredients, so you don’t need to buy any special equipment or specialty flours. Just gather together whole milk, sugar, butter, instant yeast, flour, sea salt and ground cardamom to create this simple yet delicious sweet bread.

How To Bake This Yeast Braid

In a large bowl, combine milk, sugar and yeast. Stir with a wooden spoon until well mixed. Cover and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until frothy.

Add melted butter and egg to the mixture. Mix to combine until well combined, adding more of each ingredient as necessary. Lastly, add the remaining flour in two additions until the dough comes together and forms a shaggy ball.

Set aside about a third of the dough. To the rest, divide it into 3 equal parts and shape each part into a 13-inch rope. Place the ropes on a greased baking sheet and braid, pinching ends to seal and tuck under.

Repeat with the reserved dough. Once both braids are made, put them on the same baking sheet and cover with plastic wrap. Set the baking tray in a warm spot until doubled, about an hour.

Brush the tops of the loaves with the beaten egg and sprinkle with turbinado sugar, if desired. Then, bake for about 18-23 minutes or until the loaves are brown on top and feel firm in the center.

This recipe will make 2 loaves, which can be frozen. To freeze, follow the steps for baking but skip step 6.

Once cooled, wrap each loaf individually in plastic wrap and store them in the freezer. They’ll keep for a week.

The filling in this bread is lemon curd, but you can change it up by using your favorite jam or preserves instead. Raspberry, strawberry and apricot preserves all work great in this recipe.
